“Vibe coding” is a term coined by Andrej Karpathy (OpenAI founding member) in February 2025. It's a playful way to describe an emerging way of programming where engineers rely heavily on large language models (LLMs) to generate code. Instead of meticulously writing every line, the human guides the AI, accepts suggestions, and iterates along the way.

GitHub Copilot
GitHub Copilot is an AI pair programmer that helps you write code faster. As the name suggests, it is designed to serve as your assistant, aka a copilot! It draws context from comments and code to suggest entire lines, functions, or even boilerplate code instantly.
Copilot was developed by GitHub (a Microsoft company) in collaboration with OpenAI and launched in 2022. It just surpassed 20 million all-time users! Woah.
How It Works
GitHub Copilot is powered by Codex (not to be confused with Codédex 🫣), an AI agent created by OpenAI. Over time, it’s been updated to use other, more powerful AI models, making it a much more complete and flexible tool for programmers. The AI models were trained on huge amounts of publicly available code, especially GitHub public repos. When you type code or comments, Copilot analyzes the context and generates suggestions in real time. It’s not copy & pasting, but making predictions based on patterns.
Key Features
- Code Suggestions: Get entire lines or blocks of code suggested to you as you type.
- Boilerplate Generation: Skip the repetitive stuff with auto-generated templates.
- Documentation: Generate READMEs and describe changes in your pull request.
- Learning Aid: Discover new ways to solve problems and learn new APIs.
- Test Generation: Receive suggestions for writing unit tests, which are small tests that check whether a piece of code (like a function) works as intended in isolation.
In this course, we'll set up GitHub Copilot and then build an application from start to finish.
